Chandigarh's first peer-to-peer self-drive vehicle rental marketplace. Vehicle owners list their cars, bikes and scooters in under 5 minutes. Explorers discover hyperlocal vehicles filtered by budget, fuel type, transmission and location. A decoupled Django REST + Next.js App Router architecture with a unified dual-workspace account — the same user toggles between Host and Explorer views with one click. Thousands of vehicles sit idle in apartment complexes and parking lots across the Tricity every day. Rental agencies charge a premium for the same cars that their neighbours own outright. BookmeDrive was built to close that gap — connecting owners who want their vehicles earning while parked with explorers who want a car for the day without agency paperwork, a deposit in cash, and the agency's available-only-at-their-lot constraint.

What We Built

• Host onboarding in 5 minutes — owners list their vehicles with pricing, availability and photos without agency paperwork.
• Explorer discovery with smart filters — budget, fuel type, transmission, location, and vehicle category across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.
• Dual-workspace account model — one login, one toggle to switch between Host (earning) and Explorer (renting) views.
• WhatsApp-first enquiry flow — booking confirmations and host-explorer communication via WhatsApp Business API, keeping the platform lean and DPDPA 2023 compliant.
• Razorpay Route payment split — 90% to the host's verified bank account, 10% platform fee, with penny-drop bank verification before any payout.
• Programmatic local SEO — every city and sector gets its own indexable URL (/rides/chandigarh/sector-17) for organic Google discovery.

The dual-workspace account model

The most important product decision in BookmeDrive was the unified Host/Explorer account. Any user can own vehicles (Host) and rent vehicles (Explorer) from the same login — a toggle in the dashboard switches between the two workspaces, each with its own analytics, bookings, earnings, and settings.

This sounds simple. Under the hood, it means every middleware check, dashboard route, notification, and API endpoint needs to know which workspace context the current session is in. We built the workspace as a session-level context object rather than a flag on the user model — which meant a single check in the middleware instead of forty conditional branches scattered through the codebase. The difference shows up six months into feature development when you're not debugging role-state inconsistencies at 11pm.

Architecture

Decoupled Django REST API backend paired with a Next.js App Router frontend. A unified account model lets any user toggle between Host (owner) and Explorer (renter) views with a single switch — no separate logins, no friction. Razorpay Route handles the 90/10 payment split directly to hosts' verified bank accounts. WhatsApp Business API (Meta Cloud API, not a third-party wrapper) powers the enquiry and confirmation flow, keeping the platform lean and DPDPA 2023 compliant.

Programmatic local URLs (/rides/chandigarh/sector-17, /rides/mohali/phase-7, and so on) drive organic Google indexing across every neighbourhood in the Tricity. The URLs are generated via Next.js generateStaticParams at build time — each one gets a real page with location-specific copy and a filtered vehicle listing. Within six weeks of launch, the sector-specific pages were ranking for long-tail local queries that aggregator sites weren't even targeting.

Every host completes a penny-drop bank verification during onboarding — Razorpay makes a small debit/credit to the account they registered, the host confirms the transaction name, and only then is their account activated for payouts. No verification, no payout. This one step prevents the most common marketplace fraud pattern and makes the settlement flow completely automated.

Brand & Design

Deep navy (#0D1B3D) paired with emerald green (#10B981) — a palette that reads as trustworthy and modern without leaning on the red-and-yellow of typical rental brand clichés. The navy anchors the hero and high-contrast areas; the emerald marks actions, confirmations, and positive states. Nunito 800–900 for display headings (bold, rounded, approachable), Plus Jakarta Sans for body copy (clean, legible, tech-forward). The identity was designed to stand up next to major Indian rental brands while being immediately recognisable as a local-first platform.
